When does a motor need rewinding?

A motor needs rewinding when its copper winding is damaged, most often from overheating, overload, moisture or a voltage problem. Common signs:

  • The motor smells burnt or the winding looks dark or charred
  • It trips the breaker or blows fuses when started
  • It hums but won't turn, or runs hot and weak
  • An insulation test shows low resistance
Process

How we rewind a motor

Following German engineering standards, every motor goes through the same procedure.

Photos change every few seconds. Pause, or click a step to stay on it.

Step 1 of 7 · Inspect and test
  1. 1

We check the winding, bearings and shaft and confirm rewinding is the right fix.

    Inspect and test
  2. 2

We note the original coil data so the motor performs as designed.

    Record the winding data
  3. 3

The old winding is removed and the stator is cleaned.

    Strip and clean
  4. 4

    No cheap substitutes.

Rewind with quality copper and insulation
  5. 5

This protects the new winding from heat, moisture and vibration.

    Varnish and cure
  6. 6

Bearings are replaced if needed, and the motor is tested before it leaves us.

    Reassemble and test run
  7. 7

You get a repair report, and we return the motor or reinstall it.

Honest advice

Rewind or replace?

Rewinding is usually much cheaper than a new motor, especially for larger motors. For some small or very old motors, though, a new one makes more sense.

After inspection, we tell you which option is better value. If replacement wins, we can source a suitable motor, including from other brands, which is often cheaper than the original model, and install it.

Learn more: Repair or replace?

When repair usually makes sense

  • Larger motors and gearboxes, where a new unit is expensive
  • The housing, shaft and main parts are in good condition
  • The unit is hard to replace, because it's a special size, mounting or long lead time

When replacement usually makes sense

  • Small motors, where a new one costs about the same as a repair
  • Severe damage to the core, housing or shaft
  • The same unit keeps failing

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

See all questions
How much does motor rewinding cost?

It depends on the motor's size (HP/kW), voltage, number of poles and condition. Send us a photo of the nameplate on WhatsApp for a first estimate. You'll get an exact quote after inspection.

How long does rewinding take?

Small motors usually take 3–7 working days. Large motors usually take 1–3 weeks, depending on size and parts.

Is a rewound motor as good as new?

Done properly, with quality copper and insulation and the original winding data, a rewound motor runs at its designed performance. That's why we use quality materials only and follow a fixed procedure.

Do you rewind on site?

No. Rewinding needs proper equipment. We inspect on-site, take the motor back to rewind and test it, then return it and reinstall it if you need us to.

Do you rewind motors for other repair shops?

Yes. We take on outsourced rewinding work from fellow repair shops.
